I'm studying Eastern European History and although I have searched for a long time I have found few (namely Magosci's History of Ukraine, and Bazan's History of Belarus). I am looking again, but I was wondering if there was anyone here who could recommend some good ones? I'm looking specifically from 700-1800. Thank you all. I am especially interested in a history of Lithuania because I can't seem to find one outside of Lithuania Ascending.
David Frick's Kith, Kin, and Neighbors: Communities and Confessions in Seventeenth-Century Wilno is an excellent exploration of Catholic-Protestant-Orthodox-Jewish relationships in 16/17th c. Vilnius. It is both locally interesting and methodologically provocative; the author pitches it explicitly as Dan Smail's Imaginary Cartographies meets David Nirenberg's Communities of Violence.
The early chapters of Janet Martin's Medieval Russia, 980-1584 gives a great overview of Ukraine and Belarus during the Kievan Rus' period. Later chapters are written with a focus on Muscovy and the "Tartar Yoke", though it doesn't ignore the rise of Lithuania.
