It's probably worth noting that voter turnout was already much higher than modern turnout back then. Between 1840 and 1876, there were four elections with 80%+ turnout and the rest ranged from 69%-78%, and of those only one was <70%. In 1876, the turnout was ~82% so not crazy high.
