The US equivalent to the Soviet medium-range ballistic missile R-12/SS-4 Sandal, which was stationed in Cuba, was the PGM19-Jupiter. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, two Jupiter squadrons were deployed in Italy, totaling thirty missiles at ten sites from 1961 to 1963. Another squadron was deployed at five sites near Izmir, Turkey from 1961 to 1963, totaling fifteen missiles. All Jupiter MRBMs were removed from service as an exchange for the earlier removal of the Soviet MRBMs stationed on Cuba. The Jupiter had an operational range of 2400km/1500mi and was thus in effective and close proximity to the USSR.
