I saw an image floating around facebook with some pretty sensational sounding claims about the accuracy of the bible, the most extreme being that it is 99% accurate! Anyway, It got me interested. I know the topic on the accuracy of the bible has been asked already, I was hoping to find out what the most comprehensive books are that assess the historical accuracy of the bible.
For the Old Testament, one of the best texts is:
Grabbe, Lester L. 2007. Ancient Israel what do we know and how do we know it? London: T & T Clark
It's a comprehensive overview of the historical and archaeological background of the Scriptures, and my go-to book on the subject. It's a little dense sometimes, but it's very good. You can get a limited preview of the book on Google Books here.
