I've been looking for some sources for a research paper I have to write and I can only find one or two credible sources and also can not find any primary sources.(need at least 1 for the paper) I'm also curious how a country as large as Spain both economically and geographically can stay out of a war when they fought a civil war that had Nazi and Italian forces fighting for the Nationalists.

You might want to check out Yale's Avalon Project's digitization of Spanish-Axis relations. Be sure not to fall into the common trap though of taking these diplomatic exchanges at face value- always approach them with a jaundiced eye and look for each parties' agendas.

None of the posts mentioned by /u/Searocksandtrees mention him directly, but according to wikipedia the head of the Abwehr, Wilhelm Canaris, was pivotal in convincing Spain to not join Germany:
Knowing that Franco feared a hostile German invasion of Spain if he refused to cooperate, Canaris informed him that Hitler had no such intention due to the planned invasion of Russia. Canaris also surprised Franco by admitting that he was convinced Germany could not win the war.
