I read on Wikipedia that the Romans adopted the tunic from the Greeks in the third century BC. What would a Roman citizen have worn in say 400 or 500 BC?
It is the tradition of our fathers that in the days of the kings and shortly thereafter all Roman citizens, male and female, wore nothing but the toga. In my own day this was an archaic, even barbaric practice, but there were a few who still adopted it to demonstrate to the city their commitment to the values of days long gone by. Marcus Cato conducted his public business unshod and wearing nothing but a course, undied toga^1, as if to pretend that he was of an equal footing with the great statesmen of old, rather than the spoiled son of a wealthy family whose supposed morals were but a thin covering of his own disregard for the people of Rome and the reputations of his equals and betters
