it depends on the man? oaths were taken seriously back in the day but it's not like there weren't men who still broke them, sworn by the gods or not. besides, i don't think there ever was ''firm'' peace achieved, so idk if it'd work. peace lasts for like a winter or two and guthrum gathers more ships and men and prepares the food needed for a new conquest and voila - chippenham besieged and you're running for your life
