I'm looking for a translation of Einhards "Vita Karoli Magna" and the only one I can find is called the early lives of charlemagne and seems to be only two volumes. Is this the whole work or just, as the name would imply, earlier excerpts.
I have the 'Two lives of Charlemagne' and it's not really all that long. It's Einhard's 'Vita Caroli' and the Monk of Gall (probably Notkar the Stammerer)'s work usually known as the 'De Caroli Magno' in a single volume (of which Einhard's work is only about forty pages). After reading your question I double checked that it wasn't heavily edited or something, but the intro refers to the 'brevity' of the work, and its similarity in length (as well as style) to Seutonius' chapter-length lives, so I'm pretty certain it's the whole thing. I googled the 'early lives' and it seems to be the same two works, just an older translation, so I'd go with the 'two lives'.
EDIT: Just so we're not talking about different books, The 'Two Lives' I have was translated by Lewis Thorpe in 1969, the 'Early Lives' I'm looking at was translated by A. J. Grant, who died in 1948.
