As the Iranian revolution had not yet happened, Iran was an American ally, but what did/could Iran have done during the war. Is Wikipedia mistaken? Did Iran quietly support the United States in a similar fashion as Canada? Did they send military forces? Unfortunately the article only lists Iran as a nation that supported the United States but makes no mention of them anywhere else. Thanks for any replies!
Iran publicly supported what LBJ called the "More Flags" program. The thought behind this was that more traditional US allies would show their flag in South Vietnam by donating aid to their war against the insurgency. It was not an official program, more an informal diplomatic initiative to prod allies into assisting the Republic of Vietnam in some high profile manner, thus strengthening the Vietnamese government's resolve to fight and instilling confidence in themselves. I believe Iran donated petroleum.
They were not a part of the war effort though. The countries fighting alongside the US and South Vietnam were South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand.
