The Anglo-Saxons used trenches to create hillforts, as well as the roman armies used them to secure small wooden forts. Many early cultures used them to reinforce walls by creating a higher wall on the outside and supplement the walls themselves with the dirt on the inside, in essence creating a dry moat.
