Acts of homosexuality are so harmless, and it just seems weird that so many culures have enforced or enforces harsh punishments for it.
Are there any functional explanations for this? Or is it completely tied to other cultural constructs, such as concept of manliness and purity and what not.

I'm making this post here because it does not belong on the anthropology version of the thread, and because I'd be interested in hearing from historians.
I don't have good sources, but I believe (/have read that) the British are directly or indirectly responsible for most of the homophobic legislation on, or recently on, the books worldwide.
True/false/bit of both?
