What brought about people hanging up photos of famous living people (Presidents, Generals) in their homes, and how widespread was this in the 50's-70's?

For example, households having photo portrait of JFK in their living rooms. I have also read of households in Japan having pictures of General MacArthur. But I'm wondering if there are other social reasons for this other than feeling a connection to the individual.

I have a question too, how common was/is it to hang portraits of monarchs in households, and why? Most people don't hang portraits of presidents in their homes.
