Why did Germany not bomb any of the Continental USA during WWII?

Germany did not have any aircraft carriers during World War II (still doesn't for that matter), and did not have any bases close enough to the continental United States to accomplish this. Planes during World War II had much shorter operational ranges than modern aircraft, and did not have access to modern technology like mid-flight refueling.

Germany's longest range operational bomber, the He 177, had a combat radius of 1,540 km. It's 6,300+ km from Berlin to New York City. In between, Germany had no bases to refuel: Iceland and Greenland were occupied by US forces.
