Did American infantry during ww2 throw empty clips on the ground in an attempt to make the enemy believe they were reloading?

I heard this from a friend of mine, and while he is knowledgeable about some things from ww2, I wonder if there's actually any truth to this.

It's extremely dubious: even if your hearing wasn't damaged by constant shooting and you were close enough to pick out the sound of an en bloc clip being ejected from an M1 it's not like entire infantry platoons fired with perfect synchronicity and then all stopped to reload at once.
