My 10th Great Grandmother, Isabel Holguin (b. ~1582), was "accused by the church of trafficking 'magic roots' in 1626" (The Origins of New Mexico Families by Fray Angèlico Chàvez, pp. 14-15). Is there anything historically that could provide clues as to what these roots were and why they were illegal? This took place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, by the way.
If this violates any rules or is unclear in any way please let me know.
'Magic Roots' are another way of saying she was accused of 'witchcraft'. According to an interview with Demitria Martinez on p71 of Communal Feminisms: Chicanas, Chilenas, and Cultural Exile By Gabriella Gutierrez, Gabriella Gutiérrez y Muhs she was accused of 'brujeria' because she married into a Jewish family.
