This weekly feature is a place to discuss new developments in fields of history and archaeology. This can be newly discovered documents and archaeological sites, recent publications, documents that have just become publicly available through digitization or the opening of archives, and new theories and interpretations.

The first 100 issues of an important UK archaeology monograph series, East Anglian Archaeology, were recently made available for free on their website.

These are site reports - publications of archaeological data - for the UK counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, and parts of Cambridgeshire. The series includes some of the most famous Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, books on medieval churches, animal husbandry, prehistoric barrows, Roman towns...a bit of everything. EAA is an indispensable resource if you want to use archaeological data for, basically, any project about the history of these English counties.

Having the first 100 issues available for free is a huge boon for anyone whose library doesn't specialize in UK archaeology.

  • Officials in North Carolina have released surveillance photos of a man they believe to be the yayloo that vandalized pre-Cherokee petroglyphs on Judaculla Rock.

  • A copy of Shakespeare's First Folio (the earliest collection of his plays, only 750 copies ever printed) has turned up in Scotland, in the manor home Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute. There's a statement from Mount Stuart if you want to read more - some interesting things are that the folio had blank pages (apparently for illustrations) and had been owned by Isaac Reed, who edited Shakespeare in the 18th century. His notes can be seen on the text.

  • Astronomers found evidence of a planetary system outside our solar system - in a photographic plate from 1917. The plate - a spectrographic analysis - was stored in a basement in the Carnegie Observatories. The lines of absorption preserved in the plate show that the star being studied - van Maanen's star - was being orbited by something rich in calcium, magnesium and iron.
