I grew up in America learning about the civil war and how it was a battle over slavery. Recently I saw a video claiming that Texan schools are passing it off as a battle for states rights(slavery being a side issue) Can someone clear this up for me?

I would appreciate it if you told me where you studied and whether or not you are from Texas. Albeit if you feel like you don't want to give out such information all input is appreciated. For reference here is the video

I wrote this a little while ago. I'd be happy to do my best with any follow up questions you have after reading it.

I recommend checking out this FAQ section: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/civilwar#wiki_causes

Clear what up, precisely? Are you asking about the cause of the US Civil War (you can search the subreddit for lots of discussion; spoiler alert: bascially slavery), or are you asking whether Texas is indeed teaching those things? -- er, editing, forgot about the 20-year rule: whether Texas or other Southern states have generally taught different causes for the Civil War?
