Ok, this is not the correct time period to answer your question, but is a relevant "sports" description I can think of immediately in ancient literature. When Achilles' best friend, Patroclus, dies during the siege of Troy, Achilles holds funeral games -- chariot race, boxing , wrestling, a running race, weight throwing, etc. (Iliad, book XXIII). Evidently, Agamemnon was such a good athlete at the javelin that he was awarded first prize without even throwing:

"Achilles then sets up more prizes for spear throwing. Agamemnon and Meriones stand, but Achilles tells Agamemnon to sit down because there would be no contest since no one is better than he is. He can just take the first prize. Agamemnon gives the prize to his herald."
