When we think of historical combat we think: sword, pike, spear, axe, shield, bow and arrow, etc. but video games love to have characters throw axes, knives, swords, etc. I'm wondering if there's any historical evidence to support these kinds of activities. Was it common for weapon throwing to be done in combat or tournaments?
Axe throwing was very prevalent among the "Barbarian tribes" of Europe in the late Roman, early Middle Ages periods. Warriors would carry multiple axes, or rarely an Axe or two for throwing and a short sword.
