Maybe my history is off but I always think of the 18th Century colonies, especially within the NY/NJ area, as having large British populations. What about the 17th C.?
What happened to the Dutch? Did they assimilate with the large influx of British? Did they return to The Netherlands? Why didn't more Dutch arrive once New Amsterdam was founded, or DID they?
The Dutch traded New York for Suriname under threat of war by the English (The Dutch fleet was away and unable to defend the Netherlands). The influx of Dutch settlers in NY decreased rapidly and soon they were overtaken by the English. Many names in NY today are originally Dutch names. Wallstreet was Waalstraat. Brookllyn was Breukelen, a Dutch town. Flushing Vlissingen, Harlem Haarlem and so on.
