I recently read a book which referenced Khmer Rouge enclaves and a remote region controlled by the Khmer Rouge remnants in the north of Cambodia. What were/are these enclaves like?

Were they simply communities of ex-Khmer rouge? Do/did they still hold on to the Khmer Rouge ideals? How long did they exist, or are they still in existence? How powerful are/were they? What is/was their effect on the region?

Pailin, Phnom Malai and Anlong Veng are all former Khmer Rouge strongholds which defected to the government side between 1996 and 1998.
