There are frequent references throughout the musical "Hamilton" to New York being "the greatest city in the world." What WAS the international view of New York City during the American Revolution and its aftermath?
This reference is anachronistic. During Hamilton's time the largest and most metropolitan city in America was Philadelphia. Philly was also the second largest British port (at the time of the Revolution) behind London.
