While this might be a bit narrow for what you're looking for, Lee and Shlain go into remarkable detail about the drug; from it's initial discovery, to it's seemingly inseparable ties to the hippie movement, and the eventual cult-like following that followed. Covering the CIA's intense and often botched research into the use of the drug, to the international crack down on its production by government organizations such as the FBI, DEA, and Scotland Yard.
