I have been looking at paintings of 17th and early 18th century battles to see what the infantry uniforms looked like. More often than not the cavalry gets the limelight. Is it for artistic reasons or were cavalry more used than the infantry? Also, I cannot find any reliable or good representations of infantry uniforms from these paintings.
Cavalry regiments during the 17-18th century and even up until WW1 were made up by the wealthy members of society, who had the connections and resources to be able to look after their assets. (Horses have and still aren't cheap to buy or maintain)
Unsurprising these same families were the ones who would often put the commissions in for the paintings and would rather have paintings reflecting the 'brave and daring' role that many of them would have served in, as opposed to infantry which was made up of the more common man in a larger formation.
Were there any particular army uniforms you were interested in, or is it a more general interest?
