Best way to travel from NYC to SF in 1914

I need to find details of the best way to travel from NYC to SF in 1914. By train, ship, overland?

For cost, speed and comfort: train. 99%+ of people making that trip would have done so by train.

The Panama Canal made a trip by ship possible but far longer and expensive.

There was no practical overland means of making that trip. Cars, roads and travel infrastructure were primitive, and the last vestiges of horse-drawn wagons were long gone. It would have been a car journey of a week or more assuming everything went right.
