Before the federation was declared I believe the states existed in a confederacy of sorts and that each state had a militia. Knowing human nature and that there probably existed disputes I want to know if these militias fought against each other in a sort of war between states.
There would have been no need, there was no standing disagreements, no "bad blood". The fledgling nation was war weary since it had just ended roughly 7 years of war with England. The individual states had come together under the Articles of Confederation and had not entirely separated after the Treaty of Paris. This is one of those things that marks the American Revolution as not much of a revolution. Beyond the fact that life for the common folk didn't drastically change overnight, there was no reign of terror like France, no civil war to consolidate power like Russia.
The worst thing that happened in the early US politically is that when it was obvious that the Article of Confederation did not work, the Framers of the Constitution created the Constitution and sent it to the states for ratification, which was actually illegal under the Articles since only unanimous consent of the representatives to The United States in Congress Assembled could change the agreement (read: government) between the states.
