How do Chinese people trace their family history and genealogy (especially given the huge numbers of Chinese diaspora around the world) when there are relatively few Chinese surnames, compared to the number of surnames in other cultures?
Korea is similar in its surname distribution (54% of the population have the five most popular surnames) and are generally similar to Chinese surnames in that they are composed mostly of one Chinese character. Would you be interested in Korea? I have a vague grasp of Chinese systems but I wouldn't feel confident expanding on it.
