Secondary question: The name Joshua shows up a couple other times in the english bible so why did those instances become Joshua but Jesus becomes Jesus?
Because Joshua was written in Hebrew. The new testament was written in Greek and adapted for a Greek speaking audiences. Much like the historian Joseph us adopted the Greek version of his Jewish name.
