I think you'll probably need to narrow down the scope of your question in order to get a decent response. The Papacy's been around for the best part of two millennia, and actively involved in warfare and politics for well over half of that time. Is there any period in particular which you'd like more information for? Because the answer will be different in the 700s than it will be in the 1700s.
