So I was watching 100 Years of Beauty: Iran. The model shows the progression that women had in expressing themselves through makeup etc. The video shows that in 1910 women were fairly (visually anyways) conservative.
Through the 1920's - 1970's the video shows Iranian women being able to be more expressive in their makeup & clothing. By 1980 they go back to wearing the hijab, here's a gif I've made showing this. What is the reason for this regression? What was the background for the cultural expression between the 1920's - 1970's to the culturally repression of the 80's?

First of all, being progressive in that matter is entirely subjective, Rezah Shah Pahlavi would forcibly remove the headscarves of Women, his fashion police would harass and arrest people who were wearing them. Iran, like many other middle eastern countries at the time, was ruled by a secular dictator who had large amounts of support from the secular ruling class, these people essentially just enforced whatever beliefs and views that they held on everybody else. This woman's family was likely apart of that, but that is mere spectulation on my part. As another user already mentioned, the rise of the Islamic Republic brought forth many educational and societal rights and benifiets for Women than the secular dictatorships of yesteryear ever did.
The revolution of 1979, and the rise of the Islamic Republic brought an end to 50 years of the Shah's dictatorship. After this the Hijab became mandatory.
But, Just because people began covering up more doesn't mean they were regressed. Naitive Persian/Iranian cultural expression was being suffocated from the 20's to the 70's. Iranins we're dressing in the fashion of western societies instead of actual Persian fashion, how is this cultural expression!? Even after the hijab ban was lifted, police would still harass little girls in school for wearing a hijab, and the western style of clothing was promoted over the Iranian.
