Shah Abbas moved them from contested border areas with the Ottoman Empire down to Isfahan, where he built them their own neighborhood called the Jolfa District that still exists today and is regularly visited by tourists, where they could live and practice their religion freely, and formed a respected merchant class specializing in silk products.

One tidbit that is often not included in the accounts is that from New Julfa, Armenians also forged a wide network of shipping commerce from Kolkata all the way to the New World, largely due to their condition as Christians.
