Republican groups, in addition to Orange groups, frequently found a fraternal-styled welfare system. Stipends, as well as community support for widows and Republican families, existed. However, traditional salaried positions were rare. The plurality of these systems existed as an extension of the civil rights movement in the north in the mid-twentieth century (NICRA, etc.). I would further qualify this by saying that this support was more prevalent during the Troubles than the original civil war of the nineteen-teens and twenties. To what extent these same systems continue today, I am not sure (however, I would think that they have largely evaporated as militant republicanism has declined).
