Hello i know this sounds like a general question i could have googled however im getting different dates on different websites? I know there was pre-existing conflict however when did the war start? I know the end was at the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. So when did it start? :)

With that said, the answer to your question is very difficult and varies. No one historian agrees on one set of dates. 1965 to 1973, you had US soldiers on the ground, working alongside ARVN troops in active operations. Yet there were American advisors on South Vietnamese soil since 1955, the first American casualties in 1959 and so on. 1975 ended the war for South Vietnam, but for the United States, it had essentially ended in 1973 with the last troops leaving the country.
