Did Winston Churchill serve in both a political and military role in WWII? To what extend did he serve both roles during the war?

I know he was prime minister, but I often seeing him wearing a uniform in pictures. Was he also a military commander?

Churchill was an Honorary Colonel (Air Commodore, etc) of many units and those were the uniforms in which he chose to appear during WW2. Churchill's last military command was the 6th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, in 1916. Although he exercised considerable personal authority on a granular level during WW2, his authority flowed from his positions as Prime Minister and Defence Minister and not from any active duty military posting.
