You're a bit young to be so popular! It'll be many years yet before you're taken seriously as a contributing citizen. You won't reach your prime and achieve your greatest work for another two decades.

At this age you're still learning the ropes. You're not a child anymore, and you're eligible for military service, but no one would expect very much of you in war. The Athenians are not like the Spartans, making the younger year-classes do all the hard work! If you are from a rich family, your name will have been inscribed in the Lists, which means you might get selected for longer military campaigns. If you're not a member of the leisure class, though, you will only get called up when the city marches out pandemei or panstratiai. This doesn't happen all that much.

In any case, these days people don't really get famous for their behaviour in battle anymore. It used to be all about the bravery of individuals, but now we increasingly credit the general rather than his men. Of course we might still talk about the superhuman self-control of Sokrates, who seemed impervious to the bitter cold during the siege of Potidaia, and kept his cool during the defeats at Delion and Amphipolis. But he's a rare exception. If we set up a statue or give honours, it's mostly going to be for a commander. Chabrias, for example, got a statue on the Akropolis celebrating the way he faced down the Spartans at the Old Woman's Breast during the Boiotian War.

If you're already famous at this age, it's likely to be either for your skill at entertaining at Athens' many festivals (as a lyre-player, perhaps, or a choral dancer), or your victories in our many games. I doubt you'd get far against your seniors in boxing, wrestling or pankration, and they wouldn't let someone so young and foolhardy take the reins of a chariot, but you might be a fast runner, or throw the discus or the javelin further than anyone. These things would help to make you popular with the ladies, as you would of course be doing sports naked and lathered in sweet-smelling oil. But you're out of luck there if you make it to the Olympic Games, because women are not allowed to watch.

More likely, considering your age, you're popular because you're someone's favourite. Perhaps you're really, really, ridiculously good looking. When you train in the gymnasion, do you turn the heads of all the older men? Did you catch the eye of some prominent citizen when you were a youth, and accept his advances, or maybe rebuff him very publicly? Alternatively, did your richer connections bring you along to their symposia, where you impressed the kaloikagathoi with your quick wit, deference to your elders, and wisdom beyond your years?
