During the 19th century, what was the standard European military doctrine for dealing with technologically inferior armies?

I imagine there was more to it than simply 'line up and utilise superior firepower', but what were the specifics?

A follow-up question: did they send bootcamp troops to deal with these forces as part of their training?

I'm guessing that training camps may be located closer to civilisation, while skirmishes may be where the barbarian (or whatever equivalent of these were), and this may make sending the interns a logistic challenge.
