When reading about some of the battles Rome fought, it's not uncommon for tens of thousands of men to have died. In grand battles like these, what would the losses on the winning side usually look like?
Also, do we have any idea what percentage of the defeated side's losses would typically come during the battle versus being chased down after a rout?
This question came up recently - see my answer regarding the Greek side of things here. The short of it is that casualties averaged about 5% on the winning side and 14% on the losing side, suggesting that the great majority of casualties were suffered in the rout (which is confirmed by narrative accounts).
I'm not sure if there is a Roman counterpart to the article I cited. If one of the other contributors knows of one, I would be pleased to see it.
