The long and the short of it is that although Hitler was not responsible for the Socialist component of the NSDAP, neither he nor other NSDAP heads ever renamed the party nor disavowed the word. It is important to understand that the Third Reich's conceptualization of "socialist" was quite different than contemporary definitions of the term in 2016. The state's rhetoric and ideology saw no contradiction in espousing its own definition of socialism simultaneously with various causes affiliated with German right like ultranationalism and antisemitism.
