I've seen these answers but there's not a huge amount of detail, so I was wondering if any of you learned scholars had stumbled across any particularly evocative accounts of desperation, faith or outright lunacy on your travels?

Not super exciting, but Pope Clement VI isolated/remained in Avignon during the plague. One source says he was there for isolation, surrounded by torches (Epidemics and Pandemics: Their Impacts on Human History p. 55) and another states he was exercising pastoral duties towards the dying, supervising burials, etc. (Saints and Sinners, A History of the Popes p. 167). So at least in this case some measures were taken to try and stay safe, but they weren't quite as extreme.
Although Pope Clement VI really did like to spend money, somewhat similar to the prince in Masque.
