Hi guys, I'm wondering specifically about these guys seen in the Battlefield I trailer and The Mummy. On the wiki for the Mummy it just says "the Medjai, the Muslim descendants of the royal bodyguards", but if you follow the link on wiki the Medjai haven't existed since way before Islam. I know The Mummy is terrible history, but that possible contradiction is all I could find. I do know they probably come from different cultural groups at least.
I wanna guess they're Berber or Arab (vague enough for you?), but who are these guys? Is there a historical or cultural basis or are they pure flights of fancy? What was their role in WWI?

I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be a woman. While some bedouin women do traditionally have facial tattoos they did not take part in an fighting in WWI. T.E. Lawrence laconically observed about the bedouin preference for female camels (they were quieter) that if it weren't for the camels there would have been nothing feminine about the Arab revolt at all.
edit: If I'm wrong and it's supposed to be a man, I've never heard of a facially tattooed bedouin man. Nor have I ever come across pictures from the Arab revolt depicting such a thing.
In other words, it's art direction. Not history.
