I'm currently reading Aztec by Gary Jennings, and while I'm aware this probably isn't exactly historically accurate, it does seem to have a lot of things right. I was wondering, what disease is he referring to when he talks about people suffering from "The Being Eaten by the Gods?" I've Googled a lot and haven't come up with anything.
Can you describe the symptoms of the disease for those who have not read the book?
On page 484 of Aztec (at least in the Google Books version) it is explicitly stated that the disease is leprosy. The author also notes the Nahuatl word teococoliztli, which combines teotl (God) and cocoliztli (sickness).
