I think this question is rather hard to answer. Perhaps you'd get an answer more easily if you reformulated it into a couple of subquestions, let's say "How did Buddhism spread to the US? What kind of people were the early converts? What are the differences between Buddhism and Greco-Roman philosophy? What about 20th century philosophy?"
