As far as Britain and France were concerned, the Spanish Civil War was a lose-lose scenario: neither were keen on communism, and for the British especially a Republican victory would likely mean the end of their extensive investments in the country. On the other hand, France did not want a Fascist Spain allied to Germany on its southern border, while Britain did not want a German-allied Spain overlooking their access to the Mediterranean at Gibraltar.
