It was something that never made sense to me - surely peasants or the basic farmers back in the Feudal ages weren't just weak and old. You look today and modern farmers and they're usually just huge, burly workers.
In movies, these people are usually "picked on" by the lords etc, or put up no fight whatsoever to invaders or enemies. Surely this wasn't the case originally.
