Two answers I gave under my previous account might be interesting to you. The first one explains that was not out to "totally defeat" Rome. He wanted a less powerful Rome which would no longer threaten Carthage's dominant position in the Western Mediterranean. The second one explains that though the Romans had suffered a huge loss, they were still able to defend the city itself.
