Was there a deposed king/prince who went on to become prime minister?

by imperialespada

I seem to have read somewhere about a Scandinavian monarch who become the prime minister of his country after the monarchy was abolished. Am I remembering correctly, or should I be posting this in r/writingprompts instead?

Its not Scandinavia, but Bulgaria. Tsar Simeon II was deposed in 1946 at the age of 9 when the Communists took control, and exiled. He returned in the 1990s and started a political party, and won elections in 2001, serving as prime minister until 2005, under the name of Simeon Sakskoburggotski (the Bulgarian transliteration of his family's house, Saxe-Coburg-Gotha).

But as this is beyond the 20-year rule, it's really not the right place to be discussing it here aside from this.
