One of my favorite movies is Black Hawk Down but it happened before I was born. I was just reading an old article called "What A Downed Black Hawk In Somalia Taught America" but it didn't address the question I have been wondering.
How did America and the news networks react to these events? Did the American people know they were stranded or did they only release this info after the event was over? If anyone has seen The Martian the whole country is cheering and waiting for the return of an astronaut on Mars, was it kind of like that? I'm mostly wondering how big of a deal the American people made it out to be, like constant breaking news updates on the story, or a few short clips and then people moved on?
I can't speak to America but one important reaction was from Osama bin Laden who was in Khartoum at the time. Having sent a handful of fighters into Somalia to coordinate efforts with local fighters against the Americans, he would later claim responsibility for having downed the Black Hawks. The reality was that his fighters were so small in number and so ineffectual that they they cannot plausibly be said to have had anything to do with it (moreover I don't think any of them were actually present in Mogadishu) but it formed an important part of his self-myth and the self-identity of early al-Qaeda as being "the base" of a worldwide jihad.
Perhaps more importantly, the US withdrawal from Somalia following the incident confirmed his notion (drawn from the Beirut barracks bombing and his general impression of Americans) that one punch on the nose and the Americans would be sent packing. Obviously that particular strategy for taking on the Americans would have greater consequences down the line.
