For most countries, the English name is at least somewhat similar to the name in its native language. But 'Germany' is so different from 'Deutschland' that they clearly have different origins. Where did the English word 'Germany' originate?
Most people replied correctly that it was derived from Latin Germania. Just wanted to point out that French has a similar situation. Germany is called Allemagne and Germans Allemands, which is derived from the Alemanni, a germanic tribe.
Might be a sound idea to cross-post this to /r/etymology. That sub seems to be focused more directly on the origin of words in language. Not to say the folks here aren't also very qualified.
