Did the British support the Muslim or the Christian population during their colonial rule in Nigeria?

And why?

This article gives a brief historical overview of British involvement in Nigeria. To put it briefly, they supported the Hausa-Fulani muslims because they had an authoritarian governmental structure (sultanate) that made them easier to control than the Yoruba (individual city-states/kingdoms) or Igbo (every free man having voting rights) Nigerian populations. Religion didn't really have too much to do with who the Brits supported.
