You are absolutely spot on but I would say the greater Israeli-Palestine conflict as part of a greater post WW1 trend.

The Muslim world was going through an existential crisis that we are feeling the effects of to this day. Defeat and stagnation mixed with a shock of too much change or force fed change caused a violent reaction.

This culminated in a radical form of Islamization that tells a story of a people going through a crisis. Salafism grew greatly post 1979 with help of Saudi oil money.

Now we are seeing more moderate and level headed Islamization that is less reactionary.

One thing to put in mind is that Islamic thought has never been rich when it to comes to politics.
